Obtain a copy of your Marriage License

A Marriage Certificate can only be obtained from the City Clerk or Town Clerk in Massachusetts that issued the license even if the ceremony was performed in another community or the couple moves. The cost for each certified Marriage License is $10.00.

How Do I Get a Copy of a Marriage License?

  • By Mail: Allow 10-14 days
    • A written request must contain the following:
      • Name of both individuals at the time the marriage intention was issued
      • Date of marriage
      • Number of copies ordered
      • Self Addressed envelope where to be mailed back
      • Cash, Check or money order in exact amount made payable to "Town of Watertown"
  • In Person: Town Clerk's Department, Ground Floor, Town Hall, during regular business hours. Payments may be made in the office or cash or check only. Checks are payable to the "Town of Watertown".
  • Online:  Payments can be made online with electronic check or credit cards. The electronic check option using checking account information is available for a small charge. Credit card payment is available for a convenience fee assessed per transaction by the Payment Service, not the Town.

The Town Clerk's office cannot accept requests for marriage certificates via fax and does not accept orders via the telephone. A marriage certificate, to be considered valid for purposes of obtaining a passport, Real Massachusetts ID/Drivers License and insurance must be certified with the Town Seal.
